Embracing Hygge

Well, the days are officially shorter and as depressing as that can be, it’s the best time of year to get cozy. The Scandinavian art of creating a warm atmosphere is referred to as “hygge” and honestly, I’m obsessed. But much as I’d love to escape to Denmark and hibernate in a cabin all winter, I’m always happy with plush blankets and candlelight by the Kickemuit River.

The real reason I love this concept though is because it encourages us to slow down, find joy in simple moments, and prioritize comfort and connection. At its core, hygge isn’t just about aesthetics or creating a cozy space; it’s a mindset that can improve our well-being, especially in colder, darker months when extra warmth and positivity are vital!

Creating Your Own Hygge Haven

  1. Bring Warmth Through Layers and Textures
One of the simplest ways to add hygge to any space is by layering soft textures. Think of plush blankets, chunky knit throws, and pillows made of wool, faux fur, or linen. Not only do they add warmth, but they also create a visual coziness that makes any room more inviting.

  2. Capture the Glow with Ambient Lighting
Soft, warm lighting is central to hygge. Replace that harsh overhead lighting with lamps, fairy lights, or even clusters of candles. These long RI winter nights are perfect for creating intimate, glowing spaces where you can curl up with a book or enjoy quiet conversation. Flameless candles are an easy way to add flickering light safely throughout your home.

  3. Enjoy Comfort Foods
Few things are cozier than comfort food on a chilly day. Hearty soups, freshly baked bread, mac and cheese… preparing and savoring simple, hearty meals at home embodies the essence of hygge, where food becomes a means to slow down and connect.

  4. Celebrate Nature Indoors
Hygge is about appreciating the natural world, even when indoors. Bring in elements like driftwood, sea glass, or dried flowers to reflect Rhode Island’s coastal charm. A few well-placed plants or pinecones add an earthy feel that makes your space feel grounded and connected to the environment, even on the coldest days.

  5. Create a Gathering Space for Friends and Family
Rhode Island’s culture is rooted in community, and hygge celebrates togetherness. Set up a cozy gathering spot—whether it’s a nook with extra seating or a dining table that invites conversation. Fill your home with board games, favorite books, and warm blankets to welcome friends and family.

  6. Savor the Small Moments
Hygge is ultimately about finding joy in simple pleasures. Brew a cup of tea, curl up with a good book, or just take a moment to watch the snowfall outside your window.

As the days grow shorter and colder, hygge reminds us that winter doesn’t have to be endured—it can be enjoyed! By bringing warmth, natural elements, and togetherness into your space, you’re turning your home into a true sanctuary. Embrace the season, find comfort in the simple things, and let hygge add a little extra coziness to your life this winter.
